A focused one-on-one sand casting session for jewelers and makers who already have a finished model and want to learn how to cast it in metal.
This private 2–3 hour workshop is designed for students who already have a model prepared in wax or another suitable material and want to focus specifically on the sand casting process.
Rather than spending time designing and carving a model, we'll go directly into preparing your piece for casting. I'll guide you one-on-one through creating and packing the sand mold, preparing the model and understanding proper placement and metal flow, safely using the torch, melting the metal, and pouring your piece.
What You'll Learn
-
How to prepare a finished model for sand casting
-
How to properly pack and prepare a sand mold
-
Sprue and gate placement for successful metal flow
-
Torch safety and proper melting technique
-
How to melt and pour metal into the mold
-
How to open the mold and evaluate your casting
-
Basic troubleshooting and understanding common casting issues
-
If time allows: cutting, grinding, sanding, and polishing your casting
The main focus of this session is learning and practicing the casting process. Depending on the complexity of your model and how the casting progresses, there may not be enough time to completely finish and polish the piece during the session.
Model Approval Required
Because not every object or wax model is suitable for sand casting, your model must be approved before the workshop.
After booking, please email clear photos of the model you would like to cast to errantgem@gmail.com. If possible, include photos from multiple angles and the approximate dimensions of the piece.
I'll review your model and confirm whether it is suitable for sand casting before your class. If modifications are needed, I'll let you know ahead of time so you can arrive ready to cast.
Materials
All necessary sand casting tools, equipment, torches, crucibles, safety equipment, and studio supplies are provided.
Bronze is included.
Sterling silver is available as an optional upgrade for an additional material fee based on the amount of silver required for your piece.
